Whitney Nelson Interview
Miss Arizona Teen USA 2009
Why did you decide to compete in the Miss Arizona Teen USA pageant?
I decided to compete as a goal to improve myself. I had never done a a pageant in my life and was so new to the entire experience. I promised myself if I didn’t win that it wasn’t the end of the world and I was just doing it for fun.
What was going through your head when you realized you were the new Miss Arizona Teen USA?
When I won I was completely confused! I couldn’t believe that I was the girl they were looking for. Honestly, I didn’t think I would even make top 15! I was totally shocked but so grateful.
How would a typical day go as Miss Arizona Teen USA?
Well, mostly things are the same as before but every now and then you have appearances to do, or events to speak at. My friends don’t really treat me any different but they are extremely proud of my accomplishments. But now I am at the gym every day for a couple hours and have to be very strict with my diet.
You recently flew to Las Vegas for the Miss USA pageant and participated in some activities. What would be your most memorable moment in Las Vegas?
My most memorable event of Vegas was watching my Miss, Alicia Monique, being called 2nd runner up! I know how hard she worked and she totally deserved to make it that far!
You are an accomplished dancer. When did you start dancing and how did you get into it?
I started dancing at the age of 2. My mom was a dancer and so she wanted me to follow in her footsteps.
You and Ashley Stainton (Miss Arizona Teen USA 2008) are from the same high school. Did you and Ashley Stainton know each other prior to the pageant?
Yes we did! Ashley is such a sweetheart! I met her in 7th grade when I transferred to her middle school. She gave me great advice before deciding to compete.
What would be your most memorable moment so far as Miss Arizona Teen USA?
My most memorable moment so far was either attending MISS USA or getting to be on an episode of MTV’s Made! Both were unforgettable experiences.
Lastly, what are you most looking forward to at the upcoming Miss Teen USA pageant?
I’m looing foreward to being in the Bahamas! It is so beautiful down there and I can’t wait to spend it with the girls! And of course the pageant itself is such a thrill.
