Liz Cochran Interview
Miss Alabama 2009
Why did you decide to compete in the Miss Hoover pageant?
I had been competing in the Miss Alabama Pageant for two years, and was deciding where I wanted to start competing in the next season of preliminaries for the state pageant. I had grown up around Hooverand had always admired the community and I also knew that Hoover was near Birmingham-SouthernCollege where I go to school, so I could better serve the community because it was close to my school. Plus, I knew the director Tim Gann was fabulous, so I figured what a better title for me?
What was going through your head when you were announced as the new Miss Alabama?
I couldn’t believe it at first. I just stood there to let the idea register and then reality somewhat set in. I was thinking that my dream of 9 years had finally come true.
Tell us about your platform “With Every Beat – Cardiovascular Disease Prevention”.
My platform consists of two parts that I have been implementing in the state of Alabama for the past two years- awareness of the disease and raising research dollars for the American Heart Association. To raise funds for AHA, I have coordinated a dance showcase for the past three years that features dancers from all over the central Alabama area. In three years I have raised $8,000 for the prevention of cardiovascular disease. The awareness portion of my platform primarily is focused on our youth and how it is vital at a young age that they form heart healthy habits that will carry them into their adulthood. I accomplish this by going into classrooms and playing games that highlight the four ways to form these habits which are to exercise daily, eating a heart healthy diet, not smoking, and going to the doctor for check-ups. I have also written and published a book called “Quest for a Healthy Heart” that highlights these four principles. To reach more people, I have also started a webpage www.webprevention.orgthat gives information about my cause. I also have several projects underway that I will be implementing as Miss Alabama this year.
When did you start dancing?
I started dancing when I was 3 years old and have been doing it since…
What are you most looking forward to at Miss America?
Probably just having the opportunity to compete on the Miss America stage. I have watched this pageant for years now and am so excited that it will be me up there! I also love Las Vegas, so being in this city with the competition atmosphere will be a most exciting feeling!
What degree are you currently pursuing in college/university?
I am a pre-med dance major with a double minor in biology and psychology at Birmingham-SouthernCollege.
Lastly, what would be your main goal as Miss Alabama?
Miss Alabama’s top priority is to prepare for Miss America, so probably to do my best at the national level and make Alabama proud!
