Kendra King Interview
Miss Mississippi USA 2006
Why did you decide to compete in the Miss Mississippi USA?
My employer at the time actually entered me in the pageant! I never thought I would be up to something like that so I entered with the mindset of just trying something new. One month before the pageant hurricane Katrina hit. I am very proud of my state and after the storm I decided I would go into the pageant with a true purpose. I knew I could use the title to accomplish great things.
What was going through your head when you were announced as the new Miss Mississippi USA?
I couldn’t believe it. Throughout the competition I kept picturing myself as the last one standing. I knew I wanted that crown and the title so when it actually happened I was almost relieved. I just felt so proud that I was able to accomplish such a big goal.
What would be your most memorable moment at Miss USA?
Meeting all of the former Miss Universe winners was memorable. We had a special year and were able to attend a party with 15 former Miss Universe title holders. They were incredible.
You pursued a degree in Business Administration, are you currently working in this field or are you on another career path?
I finished with a Fashion Merchandising and a Marketing degree. This is a very crazy time for us right now. I am not working for the summer as my husband and I prepare to move to a new town. However, I definitely have the entrepreneurial spirit and there are some ideas in my head. As we settle down I will be formulating these before starting a business.
What would be your most memorable moment as Miss Mississippi USA?
I am from a very small town where everyone knew me even before I was Miss Mississippi USA. I was asked to lead the Christmas parade and as my car progressed down the parade path everyone on both sides stood and clapped for me. This was so special to me because this title is a huge responsibility and it is a wonderful feeling to know people you care about believe in you.
How would a typical day go during your reign as Miss Mississippi USA?
It is hard to say. Some days I would speak at a school or I could be filling out an interview much like this one. Things were much more spontaneous than I imagined. My normal day, however, consisted of work at Susan’s Shoppe and then working out after. Always working out!
What emotions were you going through when you had to give away your title as Miss Mississippi USA?
I was worried for months before the pageant began. I knew in my heart how much I cared about the title and the state. I worried that the next girl would be after the title for much more selfish reasons. It is important for the new girl to be genuine and deserving.
Lastly, what have you been up to since your reign as Miss Mississippi USA ended?
I have been busy! I finished up my degree. I have been working in formalwear and that includes modeling in Atlanta,Dallas, and Chicago. I have been married going on three years now. My husband and I get to travel quite a bit and we enjoy every second of it. Now begins the exciting part though. We are moving to a new home where we will eventually start a family. It’s a great time in our lives.
