Victoria Ray Interview
Miss Alaska Teen USA 2008
Why did you decide to compete in the Miss Alaska Teen USA pageant?
I decided to compete for the Miss Alaska Teen USA title because I wanted to do something that was completely out of character of me; something new and exciting. Ever since I was a little girl, I always watched the pageant on TV and I wanted to be a part of it someday. I finally gained the courage and decided to compete.
What was going through your head when you were announced as the new Miss Alaska Teen USA?
The Miss Alaska Teen USA was the first pageant I competed in. I don’t know exactly what was going through my head because it was such a blur! Although, I do remember feeling shocked, nervous for my future tasks and exhilarated all at the same time.
How would a typical day go during your reign as Miss Alaska Teen USA?
My days were relatively normal but very memorable all at once. My friends and family were extremely supportive of me and did not treat me any different. I made many appearances throughout Alaska on top of walking practices, interview practices, and shopping for my evening gown, swimsuit and interview suit.
What would be your most memorable moment at Miss Teen USA?
Going to the Bahamas! I live in Alaska and we do not have very long summers up here so anytime I get to go somewhere with a beautiful sandy beach and warm weather I am happy! Overall, just being able to compete at Miss Teen USA is an honor. Another memorable moment was learning our opening number dance; I learned that I can’t dance but I still had an amazing time!
What would be your most memorable moment during your reign as Miss Alaska Teen USA?
The whole year as Miss Alaska Teen USA is full of experiences and opportunities that I will never forget. I enjoyed every moment of it. I guess my most memorable moment would be when I volunteered at the Air Show on Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage. I was volunteering in the children’s hanger where I painted faces, taught kids about the importance of science, I was an assistant in a magic show and I helped the bird handlers with their demonstration of live eagles and owls. Also another memorable experience for me was when I got the opportunity to attend the Raven’s Ball. The Raven’s Ball is a prestigious event here in Alaska where all money raised goes to healthcare for our Alaska Natives. This was a memorable experience for me because it is a privilege to be invited to such a huge event and my picture was in the paper the next day with Alaska’s senator!
Do you think you’ve made a difference during your reign as Miss Alaska Teen USA?
I do believe I made a difference during my reign because in high school I was, unfortunately, bullied by a group of girls. My self confidence was low and this pageant helped my over come my insecurities. I believe my story has helped many children and teens know that they can overcome their insecurities and draw backs with a positive attitude and an open mind
