Vanessa Baker Interview
Miss New Jersey USA 2003
Why did you decide to compete in the Miss New Jersey USA pageant?
I had a desire to compete in the pageant systems because I wanted to show diversity to the programs, hence being a minority. I thought that it was in important that people see that beauty comes in all colors and shades.
What was going through your head when you were announced as the new Miss New Jersey?
Wow, I did it! God has really blessed me this day.
What would be your most memorable moment at Miss USA?
The exciting appearances that I attended throughout the pageant week also sharing all the memories with my cousin who was Miss PA, Camille Young.
Tell us about the evening gown you picked for Miss USA.
It was a Steven Yearick design with a black and crystal beaded bodice…a sweet heart neck line and black tulle for the bottom.
What would be your most memorable moment as Miss New Jersey USA?
Attending a literacy advocacy appearance sponsored by Verizon with my dad and meeting jazz artist Al Jarraeu.
What emotions were you going through when you had to give away your title as Miss New Jersey USA?
I was sad and a bit weary because for a full year I did nothing but Miss NJ USA appearances. I had to soon realize though that Miss NJ USA did not validate me as a person and that God had plans for me beyond my reign.
Lastly, what have you been up to since your reign as Miss New Jersey ended?
I have since gotten married and have 2 children a boy and a girl. I have gotten involved with real estate investing and doing some business as entrepreneur with investing as well.
