Mollie Smith Interview
Miss Wyoming Teen USA 2007 + top 15 @ Miss Teen USA 2007
Why did you decide to participate in the Miss Wyoming Teen USA pageant?
I had never in my life imagined that I’d enter a pageant. My Mom always said she’d never have any of her daughters become cheerleaders or pageant girls. She had the skewed image of a “Miss Congeniality”-type pageant world, one in which girls who entered pageants were empty headed girls who wanted “world peace.” I had that same exact thought in my head, but I received a letter in the mail one day, asking me to participate, and I though “heck, why not?” I honestly just tried it to try something new, NEVER in a millions years did I imagine I’d win.
What was going through your head when you were announced as the winner of Miss Wyoming Teen USA?
Absolutely nothing. I drew such a blank when I heard my name! For a minute I had to check myself and make sure it was really happening, I had never won anything of such a large scale before, it was such an honor!
What was your most memorable moment at Miss Teen USA 2007?
I will always remember the rush I got right before we went on the air live. All of the girls seemed to draw closer together and you could really feel a sense of camaraderie between all of us, we had finally gotten to where we’d all been working to be! I got the chills, for sure!
What was going through your head before and after you were announced in the top 15?
First thing, if you watch me being announced compared to a lot of the other girls, I kind of lost it when they called my name for top 15. So many other girls had that grace and elegance as they walked up to stand in their lineup for the top 15, but honestly, I couldn’t even keep it together. I blew a kiss to my mom, for Pete’s sake. Wyoming RARELY places in any pageants. I had so many people just tell me “just be ready to be disappointed, Wyoming never makes it, Mollie.” However, throughout the pageant I made that my goal: no one would judge me because of what my sash read, they would see me for the strong young woman I presented myself to be. I still am very proud of myself for doing exactly that!
Who would be your role model and why?
My role model is Christina Aguilera. As a singer and songwriter myself, I can relate to her more than anyone else. She is a lot of things I myself aspire to be. Christina began her career doing a type of music she wasn’t exactly comfortable with, she did it because it was what other’s told her was best for her and her career path. In her later albums, she took complete creative control over herself and her music, which I find so admirable. She is also a woman who is extremely comfortable in who she is and her sexuality. She is not afraid to be a strong woman, throughout all of her style changes and image up dates, she remains the same amazing artist and performer. I hope one day to be able to meet her, it would be my dream!
What have you been up to since you passed on your crown?
I have been throwing myself into my music. I’ve been writing a lot more and have recorded a couple songs. I am also going to school in pursuit of a marketing degree. I plan on moving to California or Chicago after I attain my associates degree to pursue my music even more. As of now, I’m attending school and performing with a small band in live venues in my hometown and keeping my dreams alive!
