Jessica Powell Interview
Miss California Teen USA 2006
Why did you decide to compete in the Miss California Teen USA pageant?
It offered scholarships and I needed that for school in order to further my education. I also wanted the opportunity to help out my community and be a role model to my peers.
What would be your most memorable moment during your reign as Miss California Teen USA?
I attended a LGBT rights dinner. I heard stories from couples and their children and was able to learn how the unequal rights truly affect their daily lives. It was an eye opener and I am glad I was able to attend that dinner.
During your reign as Miss CA Teen USA, you wanted to pursue a degree in elementary education. Have you achieved your goal or do you have a new goal?
I am still working on that goal. I am a student at the University of California, Irvine. I will graduate with my BA in the Spring of 2010. I also plan on continuing my education to get my Master’s of Arts in Teaching (MAT), so that I will be better prepared to teach. I would also love to teach at a Junior College part-time.
What would be your most memorable moment at Miss Teen USA?
To be in the same playing field as the best girl from every other state was awesome. Having the chance to meet 50 other girls who were all there for the same thing was memorable. Each girl brought something unique to the table. It is a rare experience. It is said that, as a parent, you have a better chance of your son playing in the NFL than you do having your daughter in the Teen or Miss USA pageant.
What do you usually do in your spare time?
I do not have much spare time, I am usually working, studying, and going to school. But when I do get a free day, I try to spend it with my family. Whether it’s just enjoying each other’s company or going on an outing, we always have fun!
What have you been up to since your reign ended?
School, school, and more school! I graduated with my AA and now I’m working on my BA and MA. I have about 2 ½ or 3 years ahead of me still as far as my education is concerned. But I know it will be worth it. And I think having my Master’s at the age of 24 is going to be a great accomplishment.
