Jenny Marlowe Interview
Miss New Mexico 2007
Why did you decide to compete in the Miss High Plains pageant?
It was actually a last minute decision that worked out perfectly! I had offered to help with the Teen Pageant that was being held just outside of Albuquerque and when I got there the entire State Board was there volunteering as well. They asked if I had considered competing again in the program and I, of course, said yes, but that I didn’t know if I had already missed all of the Local Pageants. They let me know there was one pageant left and when I called the director she had a slot left for me. I ended up winning the crown and from there working to better myself for the State Competition.
What was going through your head when you were announced as the new Miss New Mexico?
When I was standing up on stage with Sherry McDowell, all I could think was “Is this really happening? REALLY?” It was very surreal standing on the stage wondering if your name when your name will be called. It is, honestly, a very strange feeling.
Tell us about the platform you used during your reign as Miss New Mexico, “Mentoring Through Music”
My platform was actually changed after I won Miss New Mexico. It became “How to be Powerful Against Physical and Sexual Assault.” It is a topic that is very close to me because when I was 14 I was assaulted in my high school classroom. I felt that young women and men needed the hear at a young age how to approach the subject and how to deal with it if it ever unfortunately happened to them or a friend.
Tell us about your experience on the reality show, “Miss America: Reality Check.”
The Reality show was an incredible experience and I am blessed that I had the opportunity to experience it, get to know the girls on a more personal basis, and win the $10,000 scholarship. We were al flown into LA for 10 days and were put up in this incredible mansion. But having 52 girls in 5 bedrooms, with 3 showers can definitely be an adventure! Some of the most fun we had wasn’t even put into the show, but will be something us girls will always remember. I also LOVED the haircut they gave me. It was spunky and fun….just what I needed!
What would be your most memorable moment at Miss America?
The most memorable moment at Miss America was after the first preliminary night of competition and we were able to see our friends and family for the first time! It was SO nice to see everyone and share that experience together.
Also, standing on stage when it was finally lit up and taking a moment to take in how big the audience would be was an exciting moment as well.
When did you start singing and how did you get into it?
My older sister had always sung in show choirs and we’d always go see every show. As a child, being on stage and performing always interested me and seeing her perform gave me the desire to pursue singing and performing. The flashy costumes, the lights, partner dancing, singing solos were all things that made my eyes light up and want to be up there with my sister on stage. Then she started writing music and when she’d come home from college she’d teach my other sister and I her songs and then got hooked to song writing. I recorded my first song at the age of 14 and just finished my full album. Which you can find on CD Baby or at www.Bigcartel.com/JennyMarlowe
What would be your most memorable moment during your reign as Miss New Mexico?
Probably when all of my friends and family came to El Pinto New Mexican Restaurant the night before I left to go to Miss America. We ate, sang, laughed, and had a silent auction! It was So much fun, plus it was my 23rd birthday as well so it was fun to hang out with everyone I cared about all in one place!
Do you think you made a difference during your reign as Miss New Mexico?
I know I did. The platform I chose to promote was incredibly important to me and I know that I helped get one little girl out of an abusive house. So, to save one little girls life, I consider myself making a difference to someone.
Lastly, what have you been up to since your reign as Miss New Mexico ended?
Well, now I am living in New York City and am performing when I can and also working. It has been quite a transition from New Mexico, but has also been very liberating. I am still helping out the Miss New Mexico Organization by doing the website and helping our new Miss NM, Nicole Miner, schedule appearances and Media event. She will be a phenomenal representative for the state.
