Brittany Smith Interview
Miss South Carolina Teen USA 2006 + top 15 @ Miss Teen USA 2006
Why did you decide to compete in the Miss South Carolina Teen USA pageant?
I decided to compete because I had always loved pageants and always had the dream of competing at Miss Teen USA. I started competing in pageants when I was about 8 in a mall pageant, then when I was about 15 I competed at a local prelim for the MAO, and was told by multiple people that I should try the USA system. The first prelim I competed in was Miss Greater Greer Teen USA, and surprisingly I won. Once I competed at Miss SC Teen USA in 2004 I loved it, loved the whole weekend, and knew I had to come back the next year.
What was going through your head when you realized you were the new Miss South Carolina Teen USA?
Well, honestly I did not know what to think. It really took a while for it to sink in! I was honestly thanking the Lord over and over that he allowed me to accomplish such a great achievement. I was so super excited! After all the pictures take on stage I went to talk to a few of my friends, that are still my best friends, that I had meet the year before and they were just as happy for me as I was, which made the night even better. Once I got out of my dress and my shoes, that were killing me, I did not want to take off my sash or crown! I even wore it around the hotel once I put on my pjs!
What would be your first thought when you were called into the top 15 at Miss Teen USA?
“OH MY GOSH!!! They just called me!!!! Ok now wait, where do I go…dang it I knew I should have practiced in rehearsals! Ok this dot…camera…smile…where are my parents? Ok now which side of the steps do I go to?!?” Yes I know a lot going through my mind at one time, but on national television everything you have been told in practice go out the window, because your mind goes blank, or at least my did.
What would be your most memorable moment at Miss Teen USA?
Wow, so many to choose from. I would have to say my favorite would be the day we spent at the water park, I love love water parks and water slides! Then the ones I remember all the time are the nightly talks my roommate, Kelsey Lawson LA Teen, and I had. We had so much fun every night and grew so super close! Then also the countless games of BS in our hotel room and during downtime at rehearsals.
How would a typical day go during your reign as Miss South Carolina Teen USA?
Well the year I won I was a senior in high school, so everyday was a typical school day for me, but the weekends are a different story! I was somewhere different every weekend, making an appearance or volunteering somewhere.
What would be your most memorable moment as Miss South Carolina Teen USA?
Besides the crowning moment, it would have to be being the state spokesperson for the Queen For a Day program. The organization is very dear to my heart and one of the first organizations I started volunteering at. I love all the events I got to attend with them, and having a fundraiser at the 2007 state pageant for the organization.
What emotions were you going through when you had to give away your title as Miss South Carolina Teen USA?
It was the most bittersweet moment in my life. I really wanted to take off running and say NO I AM NOT GIVING IT UP!!!! However, I was excited to let another girl experience just a great year, and become part of the RPM family. I was so sad during my farewell speech, I was already crying when it started and then as I heard everything I was saying and I saw my mom crying I started crying even more.
Lastly, what have you been up to since your reign as Miss South Carolina Teen USA ended?
I started Clemson University 4 days after Teen USA so I have been being a college student and studying hard. In March of 2008 I competed at the Miss SC United States pageant, won, and went to Las Vegas for the Miss United States pageant. I started dating the man of my dreams last summer, and we are talking about getting married next year. Recently I have been helping a friend of mine get ready to compete at the Miss SC Teen pageant for the MAO in July.
